There’s no place like home for the Harwood Union High School track and field teams. The boys’ and girls’ teams easily won their home meet Monday, tuning up for the state championships this weekend.
The Harwood boys piled up 171 points; Northfield had 73, Montpelier 58, Randolph 23 and Rice 15.
The Harwood girls went further, to 187 points; Northfield had 79, Montpelier 32, Rice 21 and Randolph 12.
For the Harwood girls, Ellie Ramsey and Sophie Desaro were 1-2 in the 800, and Anneka Williams led the Harwood runners, who captured the top four places in the 1,500 meters. Alice Woodruff won the 3,000, Lily Martin won the 100-meter hurdles, and Harwood won the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.
Haley Cleary won the javelin and the triple jump, and Lauren Harper won the high jump and the pole vault.
For the Harwood boys, Sam Nishi and Nathaniel Kazlow finished 1-2 in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs, and Caleb Kessler was third in the 1,500. Brennan Degen and Hayden Jones finished 1-2 in the 300-meter hurdles, and Karl Dejon-Kaiser was the lone runner in the 110-meter hurdles.
Jerry Seckler won the discus, came in second in the long jump and was third in the 100-yard dash. Kyle Dash won the 3,000, and Markus Helmken won the pole vault by 3 feet.
Harwood swept all three relay races — the 4x100 meters, 4x400 and 4x800.
Girls’ tennis team falls in DII semifinals
Burr and Burton thrashed Harwood 7-0 Monday in the state Division II semifinals in girls’ tennis.
The Bulldogs from Manchester won all five singles matches and both doubles matches.
In singles, it was Maddy Pagnucco over Ally Benn, 6-0, 6-0; Jordan Harmon over Chase Fortier, 6-2, 6-2; Irene Matas over Shelby Parette, 6-2, 6-1; Gabby Vella over Sarah Brodeur, 6-0, 6-0; and Eliza Breed over Mallory Wright, 7-6, 6-4.
In doubles, Stella Oh and Megan Knight beat Mia Burfoot and Maddie McGeorge, 7-5, 6-4; and Silvia Velasco and María De Pablo beat Sienna Jean and Lillie Miller, 6-1 6-0.
