Boys’ basketball

Vergennes 52, Harwood 37

Dec. 27

Vergennes made a big offensive push in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 points, staying undefeated (6-0) and thwarting Harwood’s effort to win its first game.

Adam Gill led Vergennes with 17 points; Liam Hayes had eight.

Harwood slipped to 0-6, but continued to improve. Grant Clark led Harwood with 13 points and Cole Lavoie had eight.

Oxbow 60, Harwood 53

Dec. 23

Cole Lavoie poured in 20 points for Harwood and Shiv Seethepalli had 15, as the Highlanders came close to winning their first game.

However, fourth-quarter turnovers helped Oxbow to escape with a win.

Anthony Geising had 18 points for 2-1 Oxbow, Matt Thompson had 15 and Hayden Tomlinson had nine.


Girls’ basketball

Vergennes 56, Harwood 28

Dec. 27

Sarah Poirier-Thayer came off the bench to score 16 points, snag seven rebounds, and record three steals and three assists, leading Vergennes to its first win of the season.

Nikki Salley had 14 points and nine rebounds for Vergennes, now 1-3.

Jenny James led Harwood with 12 points.

Vergennes broke the game open with a 17-3 run in the third quarter.


Boys’ hockey

Middlebury 4, Harwood 1

Dec. 27

Thomas Belknap scored for Harwood, but that was all the offense the Highlanders could muster at Middlebury’s home tournament.

Andrew Gleason had two goals and an assist to lead Middlebury, and Justin Stone and Brett Viens scored the other boals.

Middlebury goaltender Sawyer Ryan made 18 saves.

Harwood 4, U-32 2

Dec. 23

A fast start never hurts, and Harwood scooted out to a 3-0 lead in the first period.

Adam Lamson scored less than a minute into the game, Connor Dow scored twice for Harwood, and Connor Beck added the fourth goal. Sam Towne had two assists.

In goal, Harwood netminder Niilo Tulkki made 25 saves.

John Laperle and Nick Grace scored for 2-4 U-32. Goalie Rory Hynes made 23 saves.


Gymnastics

Milton 107.05, Harwood 85.45

Dec. 22

The best gymnast in the Central Vermont Gymnastics Academy gym wasn’t on either team — she was an independent competitor, Mallory Dutil of Northfield. Dutil claimed top all-around honors, finishing just ahead of Harwood’s Nell Tarno and Milton’s Darcy Franklin.

Dutil finished first in floor exercises and beam and finished second on bars. Tarno won the vault, and took seconds in bars, beam and floor. Harwood’s Darcy Franklin won the bars and was second in the vault.
