Harwood girls take state title; boys’ team finishes fourth

Harwood’s girls came home with a state Division II track-and-field championship Saturday, and the boys’ team finished fourth.

Harwood girls piled up 139 points, well ahead of second-place U-32 (120.5). Windsor (71), Milton (68) and Middlebury (35) rounded out the top five.

U-32 won the boys’ meet with 108.5 points; host Fair Haven Union High School was second with 89.5. Next came Lyndon at 702, Harwood at 66 and Middlebury with 61.

The Harwood girls swept the relays, won four other events outright, and had depth that piled up points in events that the Highlanders didn’t actually win.

The winning Harwood relay teams:

• 4x100, Haley Cleary, Anna-Marika Bauer, Lily Martin, Marisa Hoffman.

• 4x400, India Harvey, Ellie Ramsey, Marla Davidson, Lauren Alexander.

• 4x800, Olivia Greenleaf, India Harvey, Sophie Dasaro, Ellie Ramsey.

Lauren Alexander won the 800 (2:30.0) for Harwood, and Ellie Ramsey was third.

Anneka Williams won the 3,000 (11.26.78), with Charlotte Boyden second and Alice Woodruff fourth.

Harwood won the two-three-four spots in the 1,500, with Williams second, Marla Davidson third and Lauren Alexander fourth.

Lily Martin won the 100 hurdles (16.80) and was second in the 300 hurdles.

Haley Cleary won the javelin (105-5). Cleary and Martin also ran on the 4-by-100 team and Alexander competed on the 4-by-800.

Harwood’s Emma Russo finished second in the long jump, second in the triple jump, fourth in the 200-meter dash, and fifth in the 100 meters. Cleary was fourth in the long jump, and Marla Davidson was sixth in the 400.

Boys in fourth

Harwood didn’t win any events outright at the Division II championships, but piled up a lot of points because of team depth.

Nathanial Kazlow ran second in the 3,000, with Sam Nishi fourth, Caleb Kessler fifth and Geoffrey Kazlow sixth.

Nishi finished third in the 1,500 meters, with Nathanial Kazlow fourth and Geoffrey Kazlow sixth.

Nathanial Kazlow was also fifth in the 800.

Markus Helmken tied for second in the pole vault, Hayden Jones was fourth in the 300 hurdles, and Noah Evans was fifth and Omar Batah sixth in the triple jump.

Brennan Degen was third in the 400 meters and Tim Harris was sixth; Degan was sixth in the 200; Jerry Seckler was fourth in the 100 and sixth in the discus. In the relays, Harwood finished fifth in the 4x100, fifth in the 4x400, and third in the 4x800.
