Fresh water is under threat across the country and indeed the globe. Witness the long-running drought affecting California and other Western states.
As someone who has worked on water issues for nearly two decades, this issue is near and dear to my heart.
Vermont was proactive several years ago in better protecting groundwater by declaring it a public trust resource, in part because of warnings of water privatization by international water advocate and author Maude Barlow. Barlow is the national chairperson of Council of Canadians, a citizens advocacy group that works for social and environmental justice, including clean and public water.
Barlow will be coming to the Big Picture Theater in Waitsfield May 26 and will discuss the origins of the crisis and offer a plan for recovery based on four principles toward a water-secure future.
