Two Johnson residents are accused of stealing a prescription pad from a doctor’s office in Morrisville and using it to obtain hundreds of Oxycodone pills from pharmacies around the state.
Vermont State Police have cited 24-year-old Lauren Wallace and 25-year-old Nathan Edwards for allegedly writing 19 fraudulent prescriptions and using them at 13 different pharmacies in eight towns, including Waterbury.
The pair allegedly obtained a total of 740 Oxycodone pills, most of them 30-milligram pills. Oxycodone is a regulated opiate used to relieve pain.
The pharmacies where the fraudulent prescriptions were allegedly used include Kinney Drugs locations in Waterbury, Morrisville, Cambridge, Essex, Colchester and Milton; Rite Aid locations in Essex and St. Albans; and Hannaford Pharmacy locations in Milton and South Burlington.
The pair sometimes used their own names on the prescriptions and sometimes used false names, according to police. Some prescriptions were charged to Medicaid, while others were charged to other people’s insurance, police said.
Both suspects are scheduled to appear in Chittenden County Superior Court on May 27 to answer to charges of prescription fraud. Additional charges of Medicaid fraud and insurance fraud could be forthcoming, police said.
The Vermont State Police Drug Diversion Unit is investigating the case, with assistance from local police departments.
