An Illinois man and his 12-year-old son lost a paddle while running rapids in the Winooski River in Moretown, and took refuge on a midriver island.
Andrew Schoneman of Western Springs, Ill., and his son set out in their canoe at about 1 p.m., but ran into problems at about 3:30. Once they got onto the island, they surveyed the downstream water, and decided not to proceed.
They were able to call for help from the island.
Vermont State Police, the Waterbury Fire Department, Stowe Mountain Rescue and Colchester Technical Rescue were called in; the two were safely ashore shortly after 5 p.m. They were both cold, but neither was injured.
