Dog on the run for three months seen lately in Waterbury
The legend of Murphy the dog continues to grow — and so does the territory he’s roaming.
Murphy ran away nearly two months ago immediately after an accident in Stowe, and has since been spotted in Morristown, Stowe and more recently in Waterbury Center.
But no one has been able to capture the pooch and its owner is desperate for him to come home before the weather turns cold.
Kirstin Campbell of Morristown has been searching for her 3-year-old golden retriever since June 29, when she was in an accident while driving on Mayo Farm Road in Stowe. After pulling to the side of the road, she opened the rear door to check on Murphy, who had been along for the ride.
Frightened by the crash, Murphy bolted into the fields near the Stowe Quiet Path and disappeared. A number of people have reported seeing him since then, but no one has managed to catch him and he hasn’t found his way home to the Cadys Falls area of Morristown.
Campbell has traveled to the spots where Murphy’s been seen, and says she recognized his pawprints in a compost pile, which gave her hope that they’ll reconnect eventually.
“He’s just doing his own thing,” Campbell said. “We’re just trying to get him home.”
Campbell has owned Murphy since he was four months old and is determined to bring him home.
In desperation, she even reached out to a pet communicator in Massachusetts who claims she can communicate with animals telepathically.
Campbell has plastered the reegion with posters bearing Murphy’s photo and her contact information.
Several people have called to report they’ve seen the pooch in the area. He seems to be following rivers and mountain bike trails and staying off main roads, according to Campbell.
Recent posts on local social media indicated that he’d been sighted near the Cabot Annex on Route 100, along a trailer park off of East Wind Drive, and near Murray Hill Farm.
Campbell and her grandfather set up a humane trap filled with dog food near Murray Hill Farm, but Murphy didn’t show up.
Photos snapped of Murphy since he’s been on the run show that he’s lost a lot of weight and Campbell is worried about his health.
Murphy is tall with a large chest and weighed about 80 pounds before becoming lost. He’s wearing a black collar with an identification tag.
Anyone who spots Murphy can contact Kirstin Campbell on her cellphone at 802-793-4478, or Ed Hamel at 793-4312.
