Interstate 89 turned briefly into a sledding hill on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at about 7 a.m., as cars and trucks slid all over a suddenly slippery surface. One of them bumped into a state police cruiser.
Falling snow abruptly turned icy in the area around Exit 10, and between 10 and 12 vehicles went off the interstate between Montpelier and Waterbury.
At about 7:30 a.m., Trooper Jonathan Prack came across two vehicles that had gone off the southbound lane of I-89 near Exit 10. Prack stopped his cruiser in the breakdown lane, with his emergency lights activated, and went to check for injuries. As he was walking back to his car, the cruiser was struck by Devika Singh’s 2010 Toyota RAV4, which had slid off the right side of the roadway.
That wasn’t the end of it; within the next few minutes, several other vehicles slid off the roadway, but no one was hurt.
Police said tickets may be issued to some of the drivers. Often at this time of year, collisions occur because of inadequate winter tires and excessive speed for the conditions. Police advise drivers to slow down when road conditions are bad, and to leave extra time to travel.
