The employees at Green Mountain United Way started a project to help promote children’s literacy on Dec. 12, as part of their holiday gift to the community.

Each employee purchased a recommended children’s book and made literacy kits containing hands-on tools pertaining to the stories, making each book even more engaging to each child. This project is part of the Green Mountain United Way Early Learning initiative.

After making six kits, two staff members took the idea to Choice Strategies, a division of WageWorks in Waterbury, which had expressed interest in providing similar literacy kits to schools, daycare centers and families in the area.

Choice Strategies’ book drive collected more than 140 books and, over a three-hour time period on Dec. 13, employees made more than 20 kits.

Green Mountain United Way is looking for other area companies that are interested in holding similar team-building activities with their employees so that more kits can be made and more children can be reached. Information: 229-9532.
