Young artists fine-tune their creations at the Thatcher Brook Primary School Art Show in Waterbury.

The annual Student Art Show is under way at Thatcher Brook Primary School, with a closing reception tonight, Thursday, May 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the school.

Art pieces created by about 400 students from preschool through fourth grade are on display in the school’s corridors and cafeteria through May 28.

What makes the show unique is that each piece is truly different, said MK Monley, Thatcher Brook art teacher. Most creations result from students’ choices of media, themes and forms.

“From paintings and drawings to clay, collage and sculpture, this exhibit captures what is meaningful to each individual student,” Monley said.

To share the inspiration behind the art, all pieces are labeled with statements written by the student artists, explaining why they made it.

The school’s student council also decided to help earthquake survivors in Nepal, and hopes to raise money at the art show and at the remaining events of this school year. Visitors to the art show will be able to buy one-of-a-kind notecards designed by students using colored pencils, crayons and markers. Cards will be priced so students might purchase them. Additional donations from adults are welcome, Monley said. Pack and Send Plus donated the envelopes for the cards.

Proceeds will go to the Himalayan Cataract Project, a nonprofit organization with an office in Waterbury. It works in Nepal, across Asia and in Africa to reverse cataract blindness with surgical treatment. The group is assisting in direct relief for trauma patients in Nepal, which has suffered two devastating earthquakes in recent weeks.

Since April 26, Himalayan Cataract Project has raised $300,000 to support immediate relief through its partner Tilganga, which for 20 years has been serving many towns and villages directly affected by the earthquakes. Every penny raised will be used for relief.
