Two events are taking place on Friday, Jan. 17, at Axel’s Gallery & Frame Shop, 5 Stowe St., Waterbury. An ice-carving demonstration at 5 p.m. in front of the gallery, part of Winterfest 2014, will be followed by the opening reception for a solo show of photographs by Chris Stearns of Morrisville from 6 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The exhibit features stunning landscape photographs printed on sheets of aluminum. Stearns uses a Carl Zeiss wide-angle manual focus lens, known for its superb optical clarity. The exhibit will remain up until Saturday, Feb. 1.
