Troy Bergeron is a strong leader. Just ask Champlain Valley Union’s (CVU) head wrestling coach Gunnar Olsen. “Troy excelled in the classroom and trained with a seriousness that the younger guys looked up to. He finished strong and we’re proud of his accomplishments as our captain.”

Born and raised in Shelburne, Bergeron’s family includes parents, Andrea and Timothy, and younger brother, Kyle, an eighth grader at the Shelburne Community School.

“I started wrestling on a whim,” Bergeron informed. “My mother made it clear that I had to participate in something when I got to the high school. I decided to try wrestling my freshman year. After that I was hooked. I guess you can credit my mom for my interest in the sport.”

A three-year varsity wrestler and senior captain, Bergeron leads by example. “I’m usually the one that got everyone else organized and focused during practice. If I worked hard then my teammates worked hard too.” Coach Olsen concurs, “He pushed his teammates to be better.” And it worked. The Redhawks successful season ended Saturday, Feb. 28 during the Division I high school boys wrestling state championship meet with Bergeron in fourth place in his weight class, while the team posted an eighth place finish.

When asked about one of his proudest moments Bergeron mentions a personal wrestling achievement. “Last year I won the St. Johnsbury Early Bird Tournament to start off the season,” he began. “I was a junior at the time and it is the only tournament I have ever won…it felt really good,” he shared.

Bergeron’s Grad Challenge Project of training and entering a body building competition is another achievement worth noting. “It took three months of specific training to prepare for the competition,” Bergeron noted. “I shed 30 pounds off of my 5’10” frame and competed in the OCB [Organization of Competitive Bodies] Natural Yankee Classic in Newburyport, Mass. in July.” After he finished third in the team division and fifth in debut Bergeron admitted that he would love to compete in body building another day.

Now that the wrestling season is over, Bergeron is contemplating his future. “I want to study aerospace engineering,” he noted. “I’ve been accepted to UVM, RIT, RPI, and WPI but have not made a final decision. I’m still considering all four schools.” Based on his successful past and special brand of talent, motivation, and leadership, Bergeron is well on his way to accomplishing his next goal.
