Vicki Matthews of Hinesburg was honored as the second annual recipient of the Alice Sutton Community Service Award given by Sodexo, a University of Vermont (UVM) food service company of which Matthews is a longtime employee. The award stipulates that the $250 award must be given to a nonprofit organization of his or her choice. She was nominated by Cathy Barrows, operations manager of Sodexo.
Cited for her 17 years as an active member of the Hinesburg Lions, Matthews has also served 17 years as a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in Burlington. Matthews spends three Thursdays a month at the House and stays overnight one weekend a month to help residents while their family members are patients at Fletcher Allen Health Care.
In a ceremony at the UVM Davis Student Center, Matthews chose to give her award money to the Hinesburg Food Shelf.
The award is named after 42-year UVM employee Alice Sutton, who saved $5,000 to establish this award to thank a food shelf and to honor others who volunteer their services to nonprofit organizations in their communities.
