The Charlotte Congregational Church will show the one-hour film “Growthbusters: Hooked on Growth” followed by a lively discussion of limits to growth as it pertains to Vermont on Thursday, Feb. 19 from 7-9pm in Charlotte.

The documentary explores the most critical question of our time: How do we become a sustainable civilization? Through growth problems experienced by Colorado Springs, Colo. residents, the movie examines economic growth, income growth, and population growth along with the cultural barriers that prevent citizens from reacting rationally to the evidence that current levels of population and consumption are unsustainable.

The discussion will ask those in attendance to consider what the residents of Charlotte and Hinesburg can learn from the Colorado Springs residents, what position Vermont should take on growth, when does growth cease to be a public good, why is it more important to our society to have economic growth than clean air, and why do communities seek and subsidize growth even when it destroys quality of life and increases taxes.

Attendees will also learn about Vermonters for a Sustainable Population and its groundbreaking work completed in 2013 meant to address these questions. The event is free and open the public. For more information please call (802) 425-3176.
