Be on the lookout for scammers claiming to be from the IRS saying you failed to pay taxes or owe money from back taxes. These fake agents may become threatening and aggressive, demanding you make an immediate payment through a wire transfer or prepaid credit card to avoid arrest. Please note, the IRS reaches out to taxpayers regarding any tax issues through the mail only and will never call nor request an immediate payment over the phone.

If you can spot a scam, you can stop a scam. Contact the Vermont Attorney General’s Consumer Assistance line at 800-649-2424 or the AARP Fraud Watch Network www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork or 1-877-908-3360 to report a scam or for more information on scam and fraud prevention.
