Curtain Call: A look at what’s happening on the local theater circuit

‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’

This year, the Harwood theater program presents the 2002 Broadway smash “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” with a cast of over 40 students, Thursday through Saturday, April 10 to 12, at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., at Harwood Union High School.

The show, based on the 1967 movie of the same name, features music and lyrics by Jeanine Tesori and Dick Scanlan. Millie Dillmount moves from Kansas to New York City to become a “modern woman” of 1922 and find a rich husband. The adventures and danger she and the other girls find at the Hotel Priscilla create a high-energy evening of Jazz Age romantic musical comedy. 

Millie is played by senior Liza Hill and freshman Colin Holter is Jimmy. Sophomores Ben Burr and Nina Sklar play Trevor Graydon and Muzzy van Hossmere. Seniors Clio Briggs and Katie Robinson have the roles of Miss Dorothy and Mrs. Meers. The Chinese brothers are Sam Robinson (Bun Foo) and Matt Skelly (Ching Ho).

This is director Scott Weigand’s fifth show at Harwood, with Stefanie Weigand as vocal director, Chris Rivers as band director, Kevin Kelly as technical director, Kelsey Lowe in charge of costumes and Debbie New as choreographer.

The matinee will be followed by a “meet the band” demonstration and an opportunity for young audience members to meet the cast and explore the stage after the show.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

‘Damn Yankees’ auditions

Auditions for the musical “Damn Yankees” will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20, at 1 p.m. at the Hyde Park Opera House. The show dates are Thursday to Sunday, July 24 to 27 and July 31 to Aug. 3.

The show will be directed by Dean Burnell of Johnson and produced by Mort Butler of Stowe.

No appointments are necessary for auditions. Auditioners should bring their calendars with them to note any schedule conflicts. Music and dance pieces will be taught at the auditions and readings from the script will be used.
