Bread and Puppet

Bread and Puppet Theater is presenting “The Birdcatcher in Hell” on Friday, May 16, at 8 p.m. at the Flynn Center for the Arts, 153 Main St., Burlington, and on Friday, May 30, at 8 p.m. at the Barre Opera House, 6 N. Main Street, Barre.

The production is a reconstruction of the original, created in 1971 at Goddard College in response to President Nixon’s pardon of Lt. Calley, the only U.S. soldier convicted for the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam.

The reconstruction effort will also quote president Obama’s “looking-forward-as-opposed-to-looking-backward” philosophy, in respect to torture and war crimes. The text also features passages of slaughter and mayhem from the Iliad.

Tickets: barreoperahouse.org; flynntix.org, 86-FLYNN.

Theater camp

Green Mountain Performing Arts is offering a musical theater summer camp led by Ruth Ann Pattee, Monday to Friday, Aug. 4 to 8. Children age 9 to 11 will dance, sing, and create sets and props for the musical “Joust,” based on the legend of King Arthur and his knights.

She directs theater residencies in area elementary schools, a fall play for high school students and a spring musical for middle school students at Harwood Union.

Pattee is also a published playwright with the Pioneer Drama Service and has enjoyed performing in shows with the Valley Players, Stowe Theater Guild, Essex Community Players, Unadilla Theater, Barre Players and Middlebury Community Players. She holds classes for all ages at the Valley Players Theater in Waitsfield, and now at Green Mountain Performing Arts.
