To the Editor:

She served in the Peace Corps. She is a leader of our state’s ethics reform. Having an adopted Asian sister, she understands the importance of diversity and inclusion. She is pro-choice. She is concerned about the economic wellbeing of our townspeople. She is a strong advocate for our schools. She supported Vermont’s new gun restrictions and same sex marriage legislation. In 2014, she voted to raise the minimum wage. She not only believes in service to the community, but she has actively made that her life’s work.

Your immediate assumption is that I’m talking about a Democrat, right? Wrong. I just described Heidi Scheuermann, our Republican state representative.

In agreement with David Rocchio’s Aug. 23 opinion piece “From Britain’s darkest hour, a message for today,” please do not let our local elections mirror those on the national level. There’s intolerance on both sides that’s equally as disturbing, and we need to understand the nuances of our neighbors’ opinions before making judgments.

Neither party holds all the answers, and our democracy works best when both sides work together.

As someone who has voted Democrat 90 percent of the time, I am proud to endorse Heidi. She has always taken the time to listen to my concerns and help formulate positive steps forward. Heidi is open-minded and flexible, never adhering solely to her party’s national political agenda.

Her focus has been on doing what’s best for our town. I have tremendous respect for Heidi’s work ethic, her critical thinking skills, and her understanding that following one’s moral compass is more important than blindly following the party line.

Heidi has worked tirelessly for our town over the past dozen years, and she continues to exert the same level of energy and dedication that she always has. She is respected throughout our state, and her longevity and experience are huge assets to our town. As I will vote for Sen. Patrick Leahy, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch because their success and longevity provide a clout and influence that benefits Vermont, so for the same reason I will vote for Heidi Scheuermann to continue representing Stowe.
