Volunteers are being sought to staff the historic Barnes Camp at Smugglers’ Notch this summer and fall.
An open house will be held at Barnes Camp on Saturday and Sunday, May 23-24, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to show the renovated space to potential volunteers.
The Green Mountain Club runs the summer program, in partnership with Smugglers’ Notch State Park, Lamoille County Planning Commission and Stowe Mountain Resort.
The structure, built by Willis Barnes in 1910 as a logging camp, has had many uses over many years — hiking shelter for the Long Trail, ski dormitory, store, lodge, and off-day housing for Green Mountain Club caretakers.
In 2014, Barnes Camp underwent a total renovation to make the building an information center for visitors interested in recreation and the natural history of Smugglers’ Notch.
Volunteers shifts are four hours long on weekends and holiday Mondays from July 4 through Columbus Day. Volunteer benefits include free passes to Smugglers’ Notch State Park, a Green Mountain Club membership, free lift passes at Smugglers’ Notch Resort, and free Toll Road or gondola passes from Stowe Mountain Resort.
Information: Jenny Montagne, the Green Mountain Club’s membership and volunteer coordinator, at 802-241-8324 or jmontagne@greenmountainclub.org.
