Summer baseball is back in Lamoille County. Middle and high schoolers from Peoples Academy and Stowe are playing American Legion baseball for the Franklin County Post 1 U-16 team known as the Vermont Jays.

The team features players ages 13 to 16 from Stowe, Morrisville, Sheldon, St. Albans and Swanton. The Jays opened their season on Tuesday, June 11, on the road against the Colchester Cannons; home games are played at Peoples Academy.

Weekly write-ups on the team will appear in the Stowe Reporter throughout the season. Here’s the first roundup.

Colchester Cannons 11, Vermont Jays 1

June 18

The Cannons claimed their second win over the Jays this season.

Hayden Frazee took the loss for Vermont; Peyton Graham and Charlie Alekson had singles, Ben Alekson had two singles and Chandler Follensbee had a double.

Vermont dropped to 1-5 on the season. The Jays were scheduled to play a doubleheader at Essex on Saturday, June 22, and will host the Cannons again on Tuesday, June 25, at 5:30 p.m.

Montreal Titans 2, Vermont Jays 1

June 16

Montreal doubled up Vermont in the final game for the Jays at the Malone Invitational Tournament in Malone, N.Y.

Ben Alekson and Joe Buonanno led the Vermont offense with one hit apiece.

Vermont Jays 7, Champlain Cougars 2

June 16

The Jays got their first win of the season with a dominant showing against another squad from Vermont on day two of the Malone Invitational Tournament.

Chris Mulheron and Kevin Adams each had singles for Vermont and Cole Woodland had a hit and a walk.

Ottawa Reds 2, Vermont Jays 1

June 15

Ottawa outlasted Vermont in the second game of a doubleheader for both teams on day one of the Malone Invitational Tournament.

Peyton Graham struck out nine in four innings for Vermont, issuing just two walks and allowing no earned runs. Joe Buonanno, Hayden Frazee and Kevin Adams all had singles for Vermont.

North Country Nationals 5, Vermont Jays 1

June 15

The host North Country Nationals scored five runs and held the Vermont Jays to just one in the opening game of the Malone Invitational Tournament.

Joe Buonanno had a hit and the Jays’ only run, and Kevin Adams and Dylan Sautter each had singles.

Colchester Cannons 3, Vermont Jays 2

June 11

Host Colchester broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, and the Jays’ rally in the top of the seventh came up just short in the first game of the season.

Chris Mulheron, Jack Lund, Hayden Frazee and Peter Striebris all had singles for the Jays, who turned two double plays in the game, committed only one error and got six defensive putouts from shortstop Joe Buonanno. Mulheron took the loss for Vermont, striking out four and giving up five walks, and Peyton Graham struck out five after coming on in relief.
