The Sunday morning game featured a tough goalie in St. Albans’ Madeline Poirrier, as Stowe was unable to get more than one past the opposing netminder. In the first, Stowe’s Stormy Challenger, Reese Henderson and Addison Kneale put the early pressure on the St. Albans defense while Bridgette St. Pierre, Natalie Kubalova, Mia Hunkins and Madison Widen anchored the back end for Stowe. It took a power play in the last minute of the period for Henderson to find Challenger with a crisp pass to the middle, which Challenger buried with a beautiful backhand, putting Stowe up 1-0 with 27 seconds left.
To start the second, Sophia Flint, Molly Schultze, Emma Nigro and Hannah Lamb fiercely prowled the offensive zone, with Flint making numerous steals and passes that were largely thwarted by St. Alban’s Poirrier in net. Within two minutes, St. Albans scored twice, once directly off a faceoff and the second a ripped shot by Maeve Sargent that would ultimately put them up for good.
Claire and Catherine McLaughlin put in strong minutes and big-time hustle to keep the pressure on with tenacious forechecking and speedy skating.
Kneale and Challenger were feisty on the backcheck in the third, and with one minute left, Coach John Flint pulled Ellery Hughes from net to give Stowe the skater advantage. Despite two great shots and numerous opportunities, Stowe just couldn’t get past Poirrier’s strong goaltending.
