On the final day of the 2014 Stowe-Morrisville Flag Football Season, teams played some of the fiercest competition of the year.
The top teams from each of the three divisions faced off in the Super Bowls.
Division 1
Redskins 33, Patriots 26
The Division 1 Superbowl matched the 7-0 Patriots with the 5-2 Redskins. The Redskins’ only losses had been to the Patriots.
Although both teams were known for their scoring ability, both teams played solid defense in the first half. Cooper Olney of the Redskins scored twice on dazzling runs, and David Gosselin also excelled in the ground game, but the Patriots tied it up at 14.
The game came down to the last drive. In the second half, the Redskins were led by quarterback Hans Huber, who had multiple touchdowns and also played strong defense.
After a late touchdown to get within one point, the Patriots went for a 2-point conversion that would have given them the lead. However, the Redskins defense made the stop.
The Redskins were able to score another late touchdown and led by seven with only about a minute to go, but the Patriots were driving as time ran down. On the last play of the game, the Patriots were closing in on the end zone when Sierra Crist of the Redskins made a game-saving tackle.
It was a very well played game by both teams. Cailin Apple, Mack Bowen, Andrew Reynolds, Ryan Keene, Boone Maher and Xavier all came up with big tackles for the Redskins down the stretch.
Division 2
Giants 25, Redskins 8
The Division 2 championship was a rematch — the Giants were facing the team that had handed them their only loss of the season. They knew that the Redskins employed a wide array of trick plays and formations and were masters at spinning away from tacklers. But the Giants had an excellent defense.
The Giants’ Annie Schafer and JP and Nicky Daliere hunted behind the line of scrimmage. When the Redskins took to the air, safeties Jules Gershman and Ethan Wright were in position to break up the play. Each had an interception, with Gershman returning his for a touchdown.
When the Giants had the ball, G. Liam Wheelwright IV manned center flawlessly, with Katie Stearns at guard. Wheelwright also caught a pass for a key first down, and Alessa Kim used her speed to turn a short pass over the middle into a long gain.
Parker Kuhnert and Max Singer ran the offense, splitting time as the signal caller. They executed the offense with great efficiency, each throwing a touchdown pass. Singer also ran for a touchdown and connected with Ethan Wright on an extra point.
Sam Schoepke led the Redskins offense. His long, whirling-dervish touchdown run was one of the day’s highlights and was followed by a successful two-point conversion. Morgan Apple and Atticus Eiden were also weapons on offense. Raimon Bleda and Nate Rice keyed the Redskin defense.
Division 3
Lions 32, Dolphins 27
Additionally, 2 consolation games were played to determine the third-place teams in Divisions 1 and 2.
In Division 1, the Giants nailed down third place with a 43-30 victory over the Vikings.
In Division 2, the Titans took the third-place trophy by beating the Chiefs 33-12.
