Hard to believe it’s almost May and the Stowe High girls’ lacrosse team has just played its first game of the season.
“It was a decent opener for Stowe against a tough opponent,” said Stowe coach Jill Loughran. “We have some work to do. We are excited to see what the season brings.”
Stowe got three goals from Ashley Raymond and two apiece from Bailey Sherwin and Kalli Glanz; Sherwin also had an assist, as did Jenna Baraw, Laura Glanz, Rowan Clymer and Callie Walker.
Woodstock got four goals from Laura Kaija, three from Clancy Farren, two from Abby Kaija, and one each from Miranda Johnson, Grace Vosberg, Lily Doton and Abby Tracy.
Girls’ tennis
Rice 6, Stowe 1

Abbie Nicholson posted a win at No. 3 singles, but that was Stowe’s only victory in a tough match-up with Rice.
Nicholson beat Sophia Lothrop 6-1, 6-4.
Rice won the other singles matches: Paige Hawke over Megan Driscoll 6-1, 6-0; Maggie Fitzgerald over Rachel Barr 6-0, 6-0; Arielle De Smet over Samantha Gentle in a close contest, 6-2, 0-6, 10-6; and Paige Levinsky over Nadia Noonan 6-1, 6-2.
Rice swept the doubles: Bella Singer and Amy Donahue over Sazie Eagan and Annika Norden 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 10-4, and Maggie Righini and Darcy Lavoie over Rachael Wells and Lillian Bertrand 6-4, 6-4.
Boys’ tennis
Stowe 4, Rice 3

On a day when winds made tennis especially challenging, Stowe boosted its record to 3-1 with a close win over Rice.
Rice won three of the five singles matches, but Stowe won both doubles matches to capture the team victory.
Stowe got singles wins from Noah Mihan, who beat Hayden Kjelleren 6-4, 6-7, 10-5, and Eli Mihan, who bested Mathew Case 6-4, 6-3.
Rice won the other singles matches: Erik Olson over Tim Gallagher 6-4, 6-0, Soeren Bryan over Grant Gutstein in a close one, 2-6, 6-4, 10-4, and Matt Bouffard over Nathanial Wells, 6-4, 6-4.
The doubles belonged to Stowe. Tavish Wardell and Carl LaBarbera beat Patrick Marrinan and Evan Chagnon 6-0, 7-5 and Kai Chmura and Blake Duffy beat Bradley Eldred and Callum Rocchio 6-2, 7-5.
