The Mad River-Stowe Rugby team finished the league season a perfect 8-0 by winning Saturday at the Stowe Polo Fields.
This week’s victim was Berkshire Rugby Club from Pittsfield, Mass. The game started slowly, with both teams testing each other with tactical kicks and runs.
Stowe quickly found out that it had a stronger backfield and started scoring at will, running up a 57-0 lead at half. After a few fresh leg-substitutions at halftime, it was more of the same. Final score: 104-0.
This week, the club is off to the division playoffs; it’s the No. 1 seed. In winning all eight games, the club has outscored its opponents 645-42.
Under the coaching of Don Allen, the club has become the best team in Vermont and a force to be reckoned with in New England.
The Mad River-Stowe Rugby Club practices Thursdays at Stowe Polo Fields from 6 to 8 p.m. It’s always looking for new players. Contact club President Shawn Hayden for information at 253-6330.
