The Kids Adventure Games came to Stowe on Saturday, July 26, with 104 participants age 6-14 competing in teams of two. The Trapp Family Lodge provided the setting for the adventure endurance race which coursed through meadows, trails, woods and waterways in a scramble that tested agility, speed, balance, strength, running, hiking, biking and climbing and teamwork.
The Adventure Games were created in 2009 in Vail, Colo. and are hosted in five ski-resort towns across the country.
Competitors ran a cross-country steeplechase to challenge points including a slingshot balloon catch, cargo rope climb and slackline over a mud pit. The kids then switched to mountain bikes and pedaled back into the woods to complete the second half of the course which included crawling through a culvert into a swamp, a rope ladder, blow-dart target shooting and zip-lining through the trees, with a grueling mountain bike climb to the final phase. They hurtled themselves onto a waterslide, then hiked back up to the chapel, navigated a trail through the woods, scaled a slick wall, and finished at the rock-climbing tower. Times ranged from 48 minutes to just over 2 hours, with an abbreviated mountain bike course for younger age groups. Many of Stowe’s young athletes participated and stood atop the podium at the awards ceremony.
