Stowe is fortunate to have land and facilities that are available for public recreation. Among these lands are the Stowe Recreation Path, Memorial Park (which includes the Stowe Arena), and Mayo Farm (which includes the Events and Polo Fields).
We also have Cady Hill Forest, Sunset Rock, Adams Camp and Sterling Forest. These lands have numerous mountain biking and hiking trails.
All of this helps support healthy living, community connectedness, and our local economy.
A collaboration of organizations helps support, oversee and maintain these facilities. The Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for maintaining and operating our public parks and facilities. Stowe Land Trust took a lead role in acquiring many of our public open spaces, such as Mayo Farm, Adams Camp and Sunset Rock. The trust holds and manages the conservation easements on these properties and provides recreational opportunities on land it owns, including Wiessner Woods, Kirchner Woods, Mill Trail and Dumont Meadow. The Stowe Mountain Bike Club maintains the mountain bike trails on town-owned land and Adams Camp.
Beyond tax dollars and user fees, there are several ways you can support land conservation and recreational opportunities in Stowe.
Stowe Land Trust has annual memberships and often holds fundraising campaigns associated with the acquisition of a particular piece of property or conservation easement. Its website is stowelandtrust.org and you can contact Caitrin Maloney, its executive director, at 253-7221 or caitrin@stowelandtrust.org.
The Stowe Mountain Bike Club has annual memberships and sponsorship opportunities with various mountain bike events. Its website is stowemtnbike.com and you can contact Leslie Gauff at stowemtnbike.com or 233-2129.
Both of these organizations accept tax-deductible donations at any time.
Stowe Parks & Recreation has sponsorship opportunities at the arena and also at the Memorial Park ballfields. This is a great way for your business to gain exposure and be associated with supporting something positive within our community.
It also has a fund to offset the cost of tuition for families for whom it would be a hardship to send their kids to summer camp, or otherwise for kids who might not be able to participate in recreational programs.
Another great way to support public recreation is by volunteering for community events and programs. There is always a need for an extra set of hands. If you are interested in a sponsorship, supporting the Stowe Parks & Recreation financial assistance fund, or volunteering, you can go to stowerec.org or contact Matt Frazee at 253-2264 or mfrazee@townofstowevermont.org.
Stowe is a special place in large part due to our open lands and recreational opportunities. It wouldn’t happen without your ongoing support. Stowe works, because Stowe works together.
