I hate to say it, but winter is fast approaching. Before the snow settles in, please make sure your mailbox is regulation height (48 inches to the bottom of the box).
That not only makes it easier for mailman to deliver mail, but it also makes it less likely that the road crew will damage your mailbox while plowing snow.
Another great thing to do is to prevent damage to your mailbox is to keep the snow cleared away from it. If you have done this and you think a municipal snowplow operator damaged your mailbox, we will assess the situation and fix it or replace it with a standard mailbox if it was determined to be the town’s fault. You can email Susan Moeck at smoeck@townofstowevermont.org or call her at 253-7350 and she will dispatch the road crew.
Give room to trucks
Please be aware that dump trucks, especially when loaded with sand, are big, heavy vehicles that are not easy to maneuver or stop. Do not follow them closely and give them a wide radius when they are turning.
I have ridden around with members of the road crew while they are plowing and seen motorists pull in their blind spots. One went so far as to try to pass on their right — under the wing blade that they raise and lower to push back snow.
It is not worth it; these are big vehicles with heavy loads that can be hard to stop. Also, please do not allow kids to play in the road or along the roadside, as it can be difficult to see them with large snowbanks and/or inclement weather.
Also, please remember that only authorized personnel are permitted at the highway garage. No one is permitted to take salt, sand, stone or other materials at the highway garage for private use.
Bridge job beginning
VTrans will begin the Gables Bridge replacement project on Oct. 19.
The Gables Bridge is adjacent to the Gables Inn on Route 108, th Mountain Road. The project includes using a temporary bridge for traffic during construction.
Crews will focus this year on constructing a temporary two-lane bridge next to the existing bridge in preparation for the full replacement of the bridge next year. Traffic will continue to use the existing bridge while the temporary bridge is constructed.
Work on the temporary bridge is scheduled to be done by Dec. 1, 2015. Full construction to replace the bridge will begin in the spring of 2016. Traffic will be shifted to the temporary bridge and the existing bridge will be closed to all traffic during construction. Completion is scheduled for September 2016.
Project-related work updates and press releases will be issued and distributed to various media sources. Information will also be available on roadworkupdates.com. Francine Perkins has been assigned, as project outreach coordinator, to provide the public with information about this project. Anyone with questions or concerns about this project can contact Francine at 802-479-6994.
Cell tower
Finally, Verizon will be coming to the select board’s meeting Oct. 13 to discuss its proposed cell tower for North Hill. Although the proposed location is within the town of Waterbury, it would be in close proximity to Stowe’s border.
The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Akeley Memorial Building, 67 Main St. The meeting is open to the public.
