To the Editor:

I am writing in support of Heidi Scheuermann’s re-election to the Vermont House.

I have known Heidi since she was a preschooler. She replaced me in the Legislature and has served our community well for the past 12 years. No one works harder to make Stowe and Vermont a better place to live.

After finishing college, she served in the Peace Corps for three years and then served on the staff of U.S. Sen. Jim Jeffords, where she had an opportunity to hone her skills in assisting in the development of public policy.

I served with Heidi on the Stowe Select Board for six years and always found her to be willing to listen to conflicting points of view, allowing us to gain consensus in arriving at solutions. I know that from my experience as a member of the board for 17 years and 10 years as a representative in the Vermont House, that is the way to get things accomplished.

I know that Heidi works tirelessly in the Vermont House, working across party lines to achieve her legislative objectives. I respect that, for I always attempted to do the same when I represented Stowe in the Legislature. Sometimes we were criticized by members of our own party in our efforts to work in a bipartisan manner to pass legislation that was important to Vermonters.

That independent streak is important in building consensus on important legislative issues. I know that personally, as I had to work closely with members of both parties to make improvements to Vermont’s education funding law. While Act 68 is still subject to controversy, it has lasted with some revisions for 14 years and that would not have happened without a bipartisan consensus in 2004.

Heidi is truly an independent voice in the Legislature. In these polarized political times, we need more people who can work together as centrists to make Vermont an attractive place to live, work and do business.

She works tirelessly in our community with Stowe Vibrancy to make Stowe a better place to live. She has worked closely with the current Stowe School Board in its effort to gain approval for an alternative governance structure for the Stowe and Elmore-Morristown school districts.

I am voting for Heidi Scheuermann for re-election to the Vermont House and I hope you will as well.

Dick Marron
