About a year ago, we wrote a letter to the Reporter saying it was not us but you, Stowe. Over the years, we sold our house and rented to continue to come. When Stowe Mountain Resort got rid of the Stowe Points Card, which helped us ski, we asked grandparents to contribute as holiday presents as our hearts were always here. We were the family that came every weekend. We were the family that put kids in camp that need to learn to ski. We were the family that dined at Gracie’s or Piecasso every Friday night when we arrived.
I am sad to say we are no longer that family, and I can say I know of three other families that aren’t renting for the whole season again as well.
While we certainly can get the Vermont ski card, it does not help with the children’s programs. Camp is now $195 per child per day; with two children, you can do the math.
While we came for New Year’s week, it really was to say goodbye. We want to continue their lessons so there is another generation to ski, which is obvious that Stowe is not all about.
We said goodbye to the Archies and our local haunts. We walked Wiessner Woods one last time and attempted to sled on the hill. We will be going to Jay and Sugarbush in hopes of finding our new spot.
As we left on New Year’s, seeing a child speak inappropriately to an instructor on the mountain, I wondered, is Stowe so much wanting to promote an elite status that they are willing to cut off their noses to spite their faces? As we drove by many a vacant storefront, maybe it is already happening.
One last note: We would have loved to forward this email to the mountain as well, but there is no direct email... only a form.
