Kudos to David Rocchio on promoting the benefits of roundabouts (Opinion column, April 2).
I’ve written several letters over the years to the Stowe Reporter on this subject, as we live in London, where roundabouts and “mini-roundabouts” work very well.
The best example of “before and after” we have seen is in Avon, Colo., which is the access point to Beaver Creek ski resort. Avon always had a lot of congestion, especially at rush hour and particularly at the off-ramp from Interstate 70.
Avon installed three roundabouts about eight years ago and the congestion has totally disappeared.
Since then, roundabouts have also been installed at Vail, Edwards and also Eagle; all work very well.
The Stowe Select Board could do worse than contact Avon and get some input on the benefits that community has reaped from the decision to install roundabouts.
Avoid traffic lights, which are incredibly inefficient in off hours, except where topography makes roundabouts impossible to install.
