After suffering through a winter of bitter cold Tuesdays, the Stowe Ski Bums had beautiful blue skies overhead and plenty of snow underfoot for the 2014 Ski Bum Finals April 1.
Louise Townsend, from team Ten Acres Bistro, called the final race “epic.”
“It was a high-energy, bluebird day,” said Townsend. “The snow was perfect — best Ski Bum Final day in years.”
Only about half the teams participate in the annual Ski Bum Finals. Placement is based on a formula where points are tallied for the team’s five best performances during the season’s 10 races. A percentage of the teams with the best totals are entered into the finals.
“Another bum ski season coming to an end,” noted Pascale Savard, of team Miso Fast. “Sad to see many of the regulars missing in action at the finals, but those racing did not disappoint. What amazing performances from everyone. Thanks to all involved in making this happen.”
This year, 22 teams raced in the finals. Two alternate teams are also named in case of no-shows. With four racers per team, a total of 88 racers skied the dual course on Slalom Hill, each taking one run per course. Points were tallied based on two-run combined handicapped scores.
Bragging rights are on the line in the finals race, but that doesn’t mean the Ski Bums take themselves too seriously. Some teams were decked out in 1970s-era ski sweaters and alpine suits. Team Miso Fast donned bright pink legwarmers and some custom spandex. Elyse Werth was among the less aerodynamic racers, wearing a purple lei and fairy wings.
Season and Championship race winners were announced Tuesday evening at the annual Ski Bum Banquet at the Town & Country Resort. The Women of Winter (WoW), in the team’s inaugural year, took first place in the Championship race, as well as second place overall for the season.
“It was a fantastic season,” said WoW member Mary Wylde. “We really had fun as a team, since we had so many opportunities to dine together due to the restaurants being so generous with their prizes. A great way to spend Tuesdays!”
Team Shenanigans took second place in the Championship race. Rimrocks scored third in the Championships and also captured first place for the overall season. Stoweflake took third place honors for the season.
