Stowe Arena’s ice rental fees may seem too expensive for some, and too low for others who want the rink to bring in more revenue, but the rates are right in line with what other area rinks charge.
Last month, Stowe resident Marc Segal complained that the town government isn’t charging enough for people to use the municipal skating rink.
But select board members and other people disagreed. Board Vice Chairman Billy Adams said that, while plenty of wealthy people own property in Stowe, more than half of Stowe residents are income-sensitive, meaning they make less than $90,000 a year.
According to Matt Frazee, town parks and recreation director, Stowe’s rink fees are on par with other rinks in the region and with other rinks around the state.
Stowe Arena $195 per hour
Waterbury, Ice Center $195
S. Burlington, Cairns Arena $195
Hartford, Barwood Arena $205
Woodstock, Union Arena: $215
Mark Lyons, the Stowe town government’s finance director, said that, while people who voted for or against the $6.5 million rink all want it to earn money, raising rates might not be the best way to do that. Lower rates might actually lead to more rental of ice time, and more revenue in the long run.
Lyons said that, if he were an organization considering ice rental, “I’d use it more if fees were lower.”
