Police allege a Stowe woman was texting when her car crossed into oncoming traffic on Route 15 on May 3 and slammed into a milk truck, causing a fire that demolished the tractor unit on the truck and caused second-degree burns to the driver.
Kelsi Sharron, 22, has been charged with negligent driving, texting and driving, failure to keep to the right, and failure to wear a seat belt, according to the Lamoille County Sheriff’s Department, which handled the investigation. She’s due in Lamoille County Superior Court on June 17.
The accident happened at 1:36 p.m. near the Nazarene Church on Route 15 in Johnson.
Because she was texting, police said, Sharron allowed her westbound car to cross the center line and took no corrective action until just before slamming into the truck.
Police found the truck driver, Michelle Pike, 32, of Cabot, had been vigilant and tried to avoid the collision.
The truck caught fire after the crash and burned right down to the engine block. Pike was treated for burns at Copley Hospital in Morristown. Sharron had to be extricated from her vehicle; she was airlifted to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington for treatment of her injuries.
