Timothy Forrest Edgar, 49, of Wolcott has been sentenced to a total of 13 months in prison for tax evasion and mail fraud.
Edgar, who also has a residence in Littleton, N.H., mounted a multiyear scheme to avoid paying taxes and child support by harassing federal, state, and local officials charged with enforcing those obligations, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Vermont.
Edgar will be on supervised release for three years after he gets out of federal prison.
In imposing the sentence, Chief U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss said Edgar’s offenses had caused damage to people who were only doing their jobs.
Edgar was indicted on seven additional charges, but they were dropped when he agreed to enter a plea on tax evasion and mail fraud.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office credited the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration in developing the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugenia Cowles prosecuted the case; Edgar’s attorney was Assistant Federal Public Defender Steven Barth.
