An arsonist targeted the Helen Day Memorial Building Monday afternoon.
Police are trying to find the person who lit a couple of small fires inside the rear entrance to the building, which houses Stowe Free Library and the Helen Day Art Center.
When police arrived, “there was still a strong smell of smoke in the building,” according to a Stowe police report.
Several papers hanging on a bulletin board near the rear entrance were set ablaze, and the arsonist set fire to several pieces of paper on the back stairway, causing the carpet to melt.
Police interviewed six teenagers at the library, but none recalled seeing or hearing anything suspicious.
The Stowe Police Department is offering a $300 reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a suspect. If anyone has useful information, Stowe police ask that they call 253-7126.
