A Johnson man is accused of robbing a Maplefields at knifepoint — a crime he told police he committed to support his opiate addiction.
Joseph Meyers, 31, faces charges of armed robbery and violation of probation, according to police.
The Lamoille County Communications Center received a call about the armed robbery at the convenience store in Johnson at 11:05 p.m. Saturday night. The store clerk told police a man had entered the store wearing a dark jacket and a scarf wrapped around his face and demanded money. The clerk thought the man was joking, but the suspect pulled a knife and said he was not joking, and demanded the clerk empty the register. The clerk gave the suspect an unknown amount of cash and the suspect fled on foot, police said.
The Lamoille County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene, along with officers from the Morristown Police Department. After reviewing surveillance video footage, the store manage said the suspect was a frequent customer and identified him as Meyers, according to the sheriff's department. Police soon located Meyers at his residence and he was arrested without incident.
According to the sheriff's department, Meyers admitted to the crime and told police he did it to support his addiction to opiate drugs. He was lodged at the Northeast State Correctional Center and is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, March 17.
