Two local organizations and two well-known Vermont filmmakers have received grants from the John M. Bissell Foundation, based in Stowe.
The organization said it approved grants for 11 projects “that will contribute toward the cultural enrichment of film production and screening in the state of Vermont.”
• Stowe Story Labs, a nonprofit organization based in Stowe, received a grant to support its screenwriting workshops and related activities. Stowe Story Labs brings emerging screenwriters, filmmakers and creative producers to Stowe to work with top industry mentors to help get good works made and seen. Stowe Story Labs was founded by David Rocchio. “We are thrilled to be awarded a Bissell Grant,” Rocchio said. “We are aligned with the mission of the foundation and the support helps us grow the labs as they become an important stop for the international independent film community.”
• The husband-and-wife filmmaking team of Jay Craven and Bess O’Brien received separate grants for their projects. The filmmakers are based in the Northeast Kingdom. Craven received a grant for his film “Wetware,” and O’Brien received a grant for her film “Body Image and the Hidden Addiction of Eating Disorders”.
• The Johnson Historical Society received a grant for audio-visual equipment.
The grant amounts were not disclosed.
Other grants went to Burlington City Arts for purchase of an outdoor inflatable screen, to the White River Indie Films Film Festival for local filmmakers screening, to the Montpelier Senior Center for new film equipment, to Playhouse Theater for infrared emitters, to the Vermont Historical Society for digitizing Vermont footage, to the Brattleboro Film Festival for showing films in schools, and to a Vermont International Film Festival initiative that will involve schools.
