The Vermont Planning Association is honoring the Barnes Camp restoration and the Smugglers Notch Scenic Highway as its 2015 Project of the Year.
The Lamoille County Planning Commission and the Smugglers Notch Partners get the credit for the project, which caps a 20-year effort to improve public facilities in Smugglers Notch.
In 2014, Barnes Camp underwent a total renovation to make the building an information center for visitors interested in recreation and the natural history of Smugglers Notch.
The structure, built by Willis Barnes in 1910 as a logging camp, has had many uses over many years — hiking shelter for the Long Trail, ski dormitory, store, lodge, and off-day housing for Green Mountain Club caretakers.
Barnes Camp will be managed through a partnership involving the planning commission, Green Mountain Club, Stowe Mountain Resort and the state government.
