The Stowe Planning Commission holds a public hearing Monday night at 6 to hear opinions on eliminating all minimum parking requirements in the downtown area, except for lodging facilities and residences.
Anyone interested can speak at the hearing, which will be at the Akeley Memorial Building, 67 Main St.
In proposing the change in town zoning laws, the planning commission says Stowe village was developed long before the automobile was invented, and many historic properties have little or no on-site parking. Over the years, a number of businesses were unable to move to Stowe village because of the parking rules, and others were restricted in their ability to do business. For instance, Blue Moon Café was unable to open for lunch, the Malt Shop couldn't have outdoor seating, and Plate could not have as many seats as it wanted. And, a business like a restaurant couldn't open in either of two vacant storefronts on Main Street the former Lackey's Store and the former location of Stowe Hardware.
