The small Vermont grocery chain Mac’s Market, which has a location on Stowe’s South Main Street, has been purchased by the grocery co-op Associated Grocers of New England.
The acquisition of the markets in Stowe, Woodstock and Essex will be finalized in November, according to associated grocers CEO Mike Violette, and is a natural evolution of a relationship in which the New England grocery chain was one of Mac’s major suppliers.
“We’ve been working with Mac’s for a number of years, they’ve been a customer of ours at AGNE, and we’ve had a great business relationship with them over the years,” Violette said. “We’ve been supplying them for a number of years now, so it’s been a very good relationship and we’ve worked together to help them grow their business.”
The New Hampshire-based Associated Grocers owns stores throughout Vermont, including in Jericho, Shelburne, Waterbury, Richmond, Newport, Londonderry and Johnson, where their location was decimated in recent flooding.
Violette was recently on hand for a community meeting about the future of the location and has tentative plans to bring that store back.
Violette said that Associated Grocers plans to invest and improve some of the locations but didn’t specify which ones.
