Drivers facing delays this week at the Mountain Road bridge near Main Street are getting a taste of what the disruptions will be like next week, when the bridge is shut down completely for three days.
That three-day closure will be also be a taste of things to come; the bridge will be completely replaced next spring and drivers will have to reach Mountain Road via detours for at least the eight weeks leading up to Memorial Day.
During the bridge closures, signs all over town will direct drivers to the nearest detours that will get them to Mountain Road.
On the north side of town, the official detour route will be West Hill Road to Mayo Farm Road to Weeks Hill Road.
On the south side, it will be Moscow Road to Barrows Road to Luce Hill Road.
At Monday’s Stowe Select Board meeting, public works director Harry Shepard said pedestrians will also have to find a different route, since the covered pedestrian bridge running parallel to the Bridge Street bridge will be closed and replaced, too.
Pedestrians will have to use the Stowe Recreation Path when the bridge is closed — just as they did this week, when traffic was narrowed to one lane.
When won’t pedestrians be allowed to use the bridge next week? “During critical work time,” Shepard said Monday. “At a minimum, walkers will expect delays.”
The Stowe town government’s winter ban on on-street parking starts Saturday, Nov. 15, and runs through April.
Between midnight and 6 p.m., vehicles are outlawed from parking on posted streets and municipal lots.
The ban allows highway crews to plow the streets and parking lots without having cars and trucks in the way.
