Twenty-eight students from Peoples Academy in Morrisville and Hazen Union High School in Hardwick attended the first Umatter for Youth and Young Adult Conference, held Nov. 13 at Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee and sponsored by the Vermont Suicide Prevention Coalition.
The students were accompanied by student assistance professionals Peter Hathaway of Peoples and Mike Clark from Hazen, and Jessica Bickford, a staff member at Healthy Lamoille Valley.
Umatter for Youth and Young Adults is a youth leadership and engagement initiative supporting efforts to promote mental health and resiliency and to address bullying and substance abuse problems.
The students joined approximately 70 others from 21 organizations and schools to learn stress management techniques, to recognize the signs of someone in distress, and how to get help for a friend or classmate who is struggling.
