Talk on journalism at Stowe library
The Stowe Free Library will present a book discussion themed around journalism on Thursday, Feb. 13 and 20, at 7 p.m., led by Shawn Kerivan, Stowe author, teacher and innkeeper.
The focus of the discussion will be on two landmark plays, “The Front Page” by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, and “Lucky Guy” by Nora Ephron. These plays, bookending the 20th century’s golden age of journalism, provide startling insights into the minds and methods of journalists. As well as a discussion about journalism — its past, present and future — the discussions will focus on the format of the stage as a method of presentation.
In addition to the two plays, participants will read a selection of Nora Ephron’s writing on journalism from the new collection, “The Best of Nora Ephron.”
Kerivan studied journalism and broadcasting at the University of Maine and has worked in radio, television and newspapers. He teaches at the Community College of Vermont; among his course offerings are classes on contemporary media studies. His new book, “A Brief History of Innkeeping in the 21st Century,” will be available from The Vermont Press this spring.
