Can I get a witness? Pastor Russ Rathier answered that question today speaking from 1 John 5:6-12. God himself gave witness to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. How? The answer is in verses 7-8: “For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.”
You see, long before Jesus became a man, God had revealed many things about the coming Messiah to the prophets. Jesus living out those prophesies was a testimony to them. His baptism in water was one affirmation. The Holy Spirit came down in the form of a dove and a voice from heaven confirmed, “This is my Son in whom I am well pleased!”
Another affirmation was the blood. Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection and ascension was witnessed by many. God’s promise of a Messiah that would save his people was fulfilled. The Holy Spirit is now able to reside in us, affirming that we are reconciled with God and have eternal life. The water, blood and Holy Spirit affirm God’s testimony that came to the prophets.
If we can’t trust God’s testimony, who’s can we trust?
So, when people say God didn’t give us enough evidence to believe, they are mistaken. He gave his testimony and the events in the life of Jesus bore witness to his testimony. Whether or not they choose to believe his testimony is up to them.
