As we near the end of our journey through James, Pastor Russ Rathier took us to 5:13-18 to show us how important it is for believers to pray. Are you in trouble? Don’t run from God, run to him.
But what about when everything seems to be going right? We cry out to God when we have pain and suffering but often neglect our prayers of thanksgiving. As Rathier said, this should not be. Thanking God and acknowledging him always for everything should be a constant in our prayer lives.
In verses 13-16 we see examples of prayers. Prayer for suffering and comfort, prayer for thanksgiving, prayer for healing and restoration of body and spirit and prayer for forgiveness. But what we also see is that your prayer life should not just be a practice of individual prayers. Corporate prayer (praying with other people) is also very important.
Rathier took us to Ezekiel 3:16 to show us that we, the believers, will be held accountable for our prayers. We cannot sidestep our responsibility as children of God to stand together in prayer. James reminds us in verses 17-18 that Ezekiel prayed, and it did not rain for three years. He prayed again and the rains came. Yes, one righteous man’s prayer is that powerful.
So, imagine a united group of people coming before God to pray for each other, their families, community, nation and world. If ever we need to come together and seek God’s mercy, his power and his grace, it’s now.
Prayer Night is held each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Come see what the power of corporate prayer can do.
