“Stand up!” That is what associate pastor Gerald Hunt encouraged us to do as he spoke about the prophet Elijah. As we read through 1 Kings 16-19, we learned that the kings of Israel and Judah had become increasingly wicked, King Ahab being by far the evilest. He was a wicked man married to a wicked woman and they promoted their wickedness throughout their kingdom, turning the people’s hearts away from God.

But not every man was swayed. There was one man who was willing to stand out and stand up for the Lord: Elijah. Led by God, he stood up to Ahab, called out all the false prophets, brought down the false idols and led people back to the Lord. The many ways in which God used him to do these things are amazing. But the point is, as Hunt pointed out, that we too need to stand out and stand up for the Lord.
