A fun-filled day for families has been planned in downtown Morrisville — the 16th annual Festival of Lights on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The event has been organized by the Morristown Alliance for Culture and Commerce.
Santa & Mrs. Claus arrive from the North Pole at 9:30 a.m. for a visit at Union Bank. Families can join Santa and Mrs. Claus in the bank, have a photo taken, and enjoy cookies from Thompson’s Flour Shop.
Also planned are free holiday movies at the Bijou Cineplex, sleigh rides with a bonfire and s’mores at Oxbow Riverfront Park, and the Morristown Centennial Library’s holiday celebration honoring the 30th anniversary of Chris Van Allsburg’s “The Polar Express,” with music, crafts, refreshments and fun.
Lantern making, felt beading and garland stringing are offered at River Arts Center, puppet shows, ornament making and crafts at Grace Brethren Church, making a holiday centerpiece with Emily at Peck’s Flower Shop, coloring book demonstrations at Haymaker Card & Gift, and Santa photographs and cookie decorating at the First Congregational Church. Children can make their own pizzas at Pizza on Main.
Holiday treats will be offered at the Artisan/Farmers Market at the River Arts Center, 74 Pleasant St., and the Ballet Wolcott Youth Company will perform dance selections from “The Nutcracker Suite” at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. on the second floor. Join Hank at Chuck’s Bikes and try out fat bikes on the rail trail.
United Way’s fifth annual Jingle Jam is at Moog’s Place and includes live music, raffle prizes and drink specials.
At 3:30 p.m., a holiday parade begins at Peoples Academy and ends at Oxbow Riverfront Park. People are invited to wear an ugly holiday sweater or a festive outfit, make a float, bring noisemakers and lanterns, and march to the tree lighting and “Polar Express” book reading at Oxbow Riverfront Park with Mrs. Claus and a flame-throwing show by Cirque de Fuego. Puffer Methodist Church offers a free dinner open to all at 5:30 p.m.
