A free sneak peek of a new PBS documentary, “The Raising of America: Early Childhood and the Future of Our Nation,” will be shown on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Green Mountain Technology and Career Center, 738 Vermont 15W, in Hyde Park. Following the preview, Dr. Sarayu Balu of Ryder Brook Pediatrics will give a presentation on early brain development, and there will be a community discussion with a local panel on how to better support a strong start for all Vermont children.
In Vermont, 40 to 50 percent of children are not prepared for kindergarten. Thirty-two percent of third graders are reading below grade level. Seventy-two percent of the children have both parents in the workforce; it is likely these children are spending 40 hours a week in someone else’s care.
