Matt Dunne kicked off his run for governor with a speech in Barre’s City Hall Park on Monday, portraying himself as private-sector leader with homegrown values who would revitalize the state and its economy.
“To keep the state that we love, we must change,” Dunne said. “And to change, we need to have new leadership, leadership that has the ability to move beyond the traditional structures of state government.”
Dunne, 45, touted his experience — from positions at AmeriCorps and Google — as a remedy for government dysfunction. He said that, in his recent trek through 20 towns in all 14 Vermont counties, a consensus of cynicism emerged around state government.
While Shumlin was never mentioned by name, Dunne heavily criticized the current administration. He disapproved of plans to merge public schools under Act 46, bemoaned the flawed rollout of the Vermont Health Connect website and promised to fight for universal health reforms.
Dunne served 10 years in the Legislature, four as a Windsor County senator. He ran in a five-way Democratic primary for governor in 2010, and came in fourth.
