Girls lacrosse team completes season

Although CVU’s Lily Schmoker knotted the game at the end of regulation, Essex fought back in overtime to beat the Redhawks 8-7 on Wednesday, May 27. Annie Keen had a hat trick, Schmoker scored twice, and Lydia Maitland and Hannah Bernier each contributed a goal apiece. Visiting South Burlington rolled over CVU 13-7 on Friday, May 29. Caroline Hern led the Redhawks with three goals, Keen tallied two, and Maitland scored a goal and had two assists. Bailee Pudvar made 11 stops in net. Champlain Valley completed their season with a 14-11 loss at higher seeded Mt. Anthony on Tuesday, June 2. Keen contributed four goals, Maitland delivered three, and Pudvar saved nine in the loss.

Carter Knox tops leaderboard again

CVU senior captain Carter Knox carded a 76 to top the leaderboard during the Division I North Sectional at Rocky Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday, May 26. Results from the 18-hole round were as follows: Knox 76, Will Ryan 86, Ted Hadley 86, and Demetri Morrissey 87. In the high school boys NVAC Championship at Williston Country Club Thursday, May 28 the golf team placed third after South Burlington and North Country respectively. The results were as follows: Knox 83, Ryan 85, Jacob Bouffard 90, and Will McAllister 94.

Boys tennis loses in semifinals

Lower seed Champlain Valley Union blanked Middlebury 7-0 during the Division I boys tennis playdowns at Middlebury on Tuesday, May 26. A week later, the Redhawks ended their season in a 6-0 loss to Essex in the D-I boys tennis semifinal matches. The results against Essex were as follows: Singles: Evan Greer, E def. George Lomas, C 6-3 6-3; Daniel Ro, E def. Ivan Llona, C 6-1 6-1; Preston Gordon, E def. Nathan Comai, C 6-0 6-0; Dylan Garcia, E def. Ethan Leonard, C 6-1 6-0; Marsh Palin, E def. Justin Hameline, C 6-0 6-4. Doubles: Matt Wu/ Noah Laporte, E def. David Huber/Stephen Asch, C 6-3 7-5; Will H. Walker/Jack Zullo, C def. Nate Miles/Derek Pham, E 7-6 (7-5) 6-1.

Baseball team advances to quarterfinals

Champlain Valley Union displayed its offensive prowess and edged Essex 8-5 in high school baseball action last Tuesday. Sam Mikell went 3-for-4, Jed Allen had two hits and two RBIs, Will Potter went 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored, Deagan Poland drove in two runs, and Tanner Smith hit a double. After Thursday’s 6-1 win over North Country, the Redhawks locked up the Metro league title and the top seed for the upcoming D-I playoffs. Rayne Supple pitched his way through five innings striking out nine and giving up one run. Landon Carpenter had two hits and an RBI, Potter had two hits, Smith added two RBIs, and Henri Provost tacked on an RBI triple. CVU scored five runs in the first inning to defeat 16th seeded Missisquoi 12-1 in the first round of the D-I baseball playoffs. Supple contributed three hits and three RBIs, and Potter pitched four scoreless innings, scored twice, and went 2-for-3. Mikell went 1-for-2 and drove in two runs for the 16-1 Redhawks. The team faces Burr & Burton in the quarterfinals on Friday, June 5 at 4:30pm at home.

Boys lax continues winning streak as playoffs begin

Hat tricks were plentiful for the Redhawks as they pounded Colchester 15-6 on Tuesday, May 26. Charlie Bernicke (three assists), Elliott Mitchell (two assists), Owen McCuin (one assist) and Griffin DiParlo (one assist) contributed three goals apiece. Dylan Schaefer scored and had three helpers while Noah Kiernan tallied a goal and had two helpers for CVU. The Redhawks defeated Mount Mansfield 15-2 on Friday, May 29. CVU’s Collin Osbahr scored four goals, Mitchell contributed three goals and an assist, Bernicke had a goal, and an assist, and Matt Palmer had a goal, and a helper as the Redhawks head toward playoffs with a 4-game win streak intact. On Tuesday, CVU made it five wins in a row with an 11-5 defeat of Mt. Mansfield. Bernicke chipped in three goals and an assist, Palmer and Osbahr contributed two each, and both Oliver Masson and Walter Braun tallied a goal and an assist. Gronlund and Matt Murakami combined for five saves.  The team is slated to play Mt. Anthony on Friday, June 5 at 4pm in the quarterfinals.

Softball team completes season

Essex defeated Champlain Valley 24-6 during high school girls softball action on Tuesday, May 26. Two days later North Country crushed the Redhawks 22-3. Kaitlin Songer went 3-for-3 and Claire Potter contributed three hits in the loss. On Tuesday, the softball team finished its season with an 11-0 loss to Mt. Anthony. Lila Ottinger had two singles in the loss.

Track & Field participants fare well at Essex Invitational

Boys 100 meters: 3. Tawn Tomasi, CVU. 1,500: 2. Tyler Marshall, CVU. 3,000: 4. Marshall, CVU. 300 hurdles: 4×100: 1. CVU (Akey, Baccei, Cote, Tomasi) 44.71. 4×800: 5. CVU. Pole vault: 4. Tyler VanDyk, CVU. Triple jump: 5. Benjamin Fox, CVU. Shot put: 2. Richard Tegatz, CVU 44-10.5. Discus: 5. Max Riley, CVU.

Girls tennis advances to title match

Champlain Valley’s perfect season remains intact after defeating Burlington 6-1 on Friday, May 29 and Essex 6-1 on June 2. The results against Essex were as follows: Singles: Kathy Joseph, C def. The team will play South Burlington for the crown on a date and time to be determined.
